Beyond the southern coast of Western Australia, there is an archipelago is known as the Recherche Archipelago, the largest of which is located on the Middle Island. The lake is separated from the ocean by a long narrow beach.

It is 600 meters long and 250 meters wide. It is spread over 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres).
Scientists have discovered that the waters of Lake Hillier turn pink due to a combination of a microbial species called Dunaliella salina and a microbial species called halobacteria.

The salt concentration in this lake is very high. Lake Hillier is currently protected by the Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve, and Lake Hillier and its environs have been designated a protected area.

At present, only scientists are allowed to enter the area, and access to the area by the general public is severely restricted.
